Castlefield School

Castlefield Project

The New Year brings a new school for the pupils at Castlefield and one69a collective have been working with a group of students to make a variety of art works to be displayed in their school.

The initial phase of this project investigates the local community, Hulme.

T shirt printing

The group made their own stencils and created a design to define their identity.  They then used these stencils to hand print their own t shirts using silk screens.

 Photography

The group followed a marked route on a map of Hulme and made a photo documentary of the journey. Following basic photography techniques the group recorded their environment from a variety of perspectives.  Using photography as a research tool encouraged the group to consider their surroundings in more depth.

Silk Screen Printing

Using the photography from previous session, the group developed the images into stencils, which were then cut, and hand screen printed onto material pieces and stitched together to make a hanging piece of artwork

 Projection

Using the theatre space, we projected the photographs the group had previously taken onto large drawing boards, which were covered inpaper.  The group then sketched ontop of the projected images, we continually changed the image but kept the same paper which gradually built up a collage of hand drawn images of Hulme.

We also used a projection technique, which creates feedback through the video camera.  This distorts any movement, which occurs between the video camera and the projection.  Members of the group moved, danced to created trails and patterns which were also drawn over and around.

Comic Life

We gave a brief introduction on how to use the apple software Comic Life and the group then designed their own comic about a day inthe life of Hulme.  They included live images of themselves and photography from earlier stages of the project.
