Drama Club

Working in partnership with ODD Theatre Company our Afterschool Drama Clubs with local Primary schools have been really popular and rewarding for all involved. Over a term the children create their own dramatic pieces on a variety of themes working towards a final performance.

St Wilfrid's Drama Club - New Beginnings

Using the theme New Beginnings, we opened up discussion with the groups about what they liked and didn't like about their school and their communities and how it feels to be a part of them. We used games and Drama exercises to look at behaviours within schools and communities and how to welcome people into new environments. We looked at the concept of 'What If ?' to creatively open up their imagination and see how the world could be, and what the world would be like if there were no rules, creating scenes that showed the dream and also the reality.

Teachers

Working with a professional theatre company, the drama projects increase the children's drama skills, confidence, team work and personal development. Working towards a short final performance in front of their peers, standing up in assembly is a real achievement for the young people. Themes and topics undertaken so far have all come out of discussion with the young people as to what is important to them whilst being grounded in both SEAL objectives -New Beginnings, Good To Be Me and also elements from the Every Child Matters agenda including Staying safe in school and Enjoy and Achieve.

The children learn to empathise with many different characters and scenarios and think about feelings and different outcomes. The project enables the children to explore new ideas and allow their imaginations to conjur up fantastical scenes and channel them into a dramatic sequence.
