MC Afterschool Club

Working with Zion's MC Crystalize, over the sessions the pupils learnt how to write lyrics and poetry and got ready to perform these orginal pieces to music. The finished mix was then recorded to CD for the children to perform to and keep.

Our projects to date at Holy Name Primary School in Hulme and Heald Place Primary in Moss Side have centered around the themes of identity and self esteem and just what it means to be you. The children talked about their ideas of identity, what makes them unique, how they approached situations and challenges and what they hoped for in the future. Virtually any subject can be tackled with this project and the participants can speak freely and debate about the issues important to them and how they feel.

Whilst performing his or her own lyrics, the children worked together as a group to make the finished piece. On the final session the pupils recorded their rhymes to music and made their very own track! Crystalize then mixed the CD and everyone taking part was given a copy of the final track and an instrumental version so that they can perform live at any opportunity!

"In the future I would like to have a show!" Andrew, Heald Place Primary

"I enjoyed the singing on the mic the most" Jeruscha, Heald Place Primary

Teachers!

So far the projects have been very popular amongst young boys in particular and we have found that over the course of the project they develop in confidence and self esteem as well as progress with oral and literacy skills. The themes of the project covered Good to be Me part of the Primary school SEAL agenda. This is a fun and unconventional way to write poetry and think about the power of spoken word. The children will learn about rhythm and timing, write about things important to them and enhance their performance skills in front of their peers.
